Greek salad, or “Horiatiki,” is a classic Mediterranean dish that’s both refreshing and satisfying. Known for its crisp vegetables and tangy feta cheese, it’s a staple in Greek cuisine and a perfect addition to any meal. Here’s how to prepare a traditional Greek salad at home.
Ingredients
- 250 g ripe tomatoes (about 2 medium)
- 200 g cucumbers (about 2 medium)
- 150 g bell pepper (1 large, any color)
- 50 g red onion (1/2 medium onion)
- 100 g feta cheese
- 50 g black olives (about 15–20 pieces, pitted)
- 20 g extra virgin olive oil (2 tablespoons)
- 15 g lemon juice (1 tablespoon)
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt to taste
Method
- Prepare the Vegetables: Cut the tomatoes into large chunks. Peel the cucumbers if desired and cut them into thick slices or chunks. Remove the seeds from the bell pepper and cut it into strips or chunks. Thinly slice the red onion.
- Assemble the Salad: In a large salad bowl, combine the tomatoes, cucumbers, bell pepper, and red onion. Toss gently to mix.
- Add Feta and Olives: Crumble the feta cheese over the top of the salad. Add the black olives.
- Dress the Salad: In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, lemon juice, dried oregano, and a pinch of salt. Drizzle the dressing over the salad.
- Toss and Serve: Gently toss the salad to coat the vegetables evenly with the dressing. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.
- Optional Garnish: You can add additional fresh herbs like parsley or basil if desired, but they are not traditional.
Serve immediately as a refreshing side dish or light main course. Enjoy the vibrant flavors of this classic Greek salad!
