Apple pie is a timeless dessert, known for its tender, buttery crust and warm, spiced apple filling. This recipe takes you through each step to create a delicious homemade apple pie that’s perfect for sharing with family and friends. Follow these simple instructions to achieve a golden, flaky crust and a flavorful filling.

Ingredients

  • Flour: 2 cups
  • Butter: 150 g (cold)
  • Salt: a pinch
  • Sugar: 1 tbsp
  • Cold water: 60-70 ml
  • Apples: 1 kg
  • Brown sugar: 150-200 g (to taste)
  • Butter: 30 g
  • Ground cinnamon: 1 tsp
  • Ground nutmeg: ½ tsp
  • Cornstarch: 2 tsp
  • Lemon juice: 2 tbsp

Method

  1. Prepare the dough: Sift 2 cups of flour into a large bowl, add a pinch of salt and 1 tablespoon of sugar, and mix well. Cut 150 g of cold butter into small pieces and add to the flour mixture. Using your hands, rub the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add 60-70 ml of cold water, a little at a time, and knead the dough until it becomes smooth and pliable. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.
  2. Make the filling: While the dough chills, peel, core, and slice 1 kg of apples. Drizzle the apple slices with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice to prevent browning. In a heated pan, melt 30 g of butter and add the apple slices. Sauté the apples for 5 minutes. Add 150-200 g of brown sugar (adjust to taste), 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and ½ teaspoon of ground nutmeg. Cook for 10-15 minutes until the apples soften slightly. Stir in 2 teaspoons of cornstarch to thicken the mixture, then cook for another couple of minutes. Set aside to cool.
  3. Assemble the pie: Divide the chilled dough into two portions. Roll out one half and place it in a pie dish, making sure the dough covers the edges. Pour the apple filling into the crust. Roll out the second portion of dough and place it on top of the pie. Trim any excess dough and crimp the edges to seal. Cut a few slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape. Alternatively, you can cut the dough into strips and create a lattice design for the top.
  4. Bake the pie: Preheat the oven to 180°C (356°F). Place the pie in the oven and bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown. Let the pie cool slightly before serving.
