Baked Mac and Cheese is a beloved classic that combines creamy pasta with gooey cheese, creating a dish that is both comforting and satisfying. Its roots may lie in European cuisine, but it has found a special place in American hearts. This recipe is straightforward, quick to prepare, and perfect for any occasion, ensuring no one leaves the table hungry.
Ingredients
- 450 grams elbow macaroni
- 4 cups cheddar cheese (shredded)
- 2 cups Gouda cheese (shredded)
- 2 cups whole milk
- 3 large eggs
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- Kosher salt (to taste)
- Ground black pepper (to taste)
Method
- Preheat your oven to 175°C (350°F). Grease a large baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
- In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the macaroni according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain the pasta and set it aside.
- In a large mixing bowl or in the same pot used for the macaroni, combine the cooked pasta with the butter. Season with salt and pepper. Stir in 2 cups of cheddar cheese.
- Layer half of the macaroni mixture into the prepared baking dish. Top with a mixture of cheddar and Gouda cheese, then add the remaining macaroni on top, similar to assembling lasagna.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk. Pour this mixture evenly over the layered macaroni.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 to 35 minutes. Be careful not to overcook; the dish may seem slightly jiggly when you take it out.
- Turn on the broiler in your oven. Sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese on top and broil until golden brown. The dish will firm up as it cools. Optionally, garnish with fresh herbs before serving.
